Ford Explorer MPG
How far do you want to go? The Ford Explorer has what it takes to get you there with limited stops at the pump. That’s especially true considering it has an available 3.3L V6 Hybrid engine, which gets the following EPA-estimated MPG ratings when equipped with 4-wheel drive (4WD):
- 23 city MPG
- 26 highway MPG
- 25 combined MPG
Three gas engines are available too. The standard I-4 engine gets an EPA-estimated 20 city/27 highway MPG with 4WD. The V6 engines get an EPA-estimated 18 city/24 highway MPG with 4WD.
Ford Explorer Towing Capacity
The Ford Explorer has a maximum towing capacity of 5,600 pounds when properly equipped. It gets that kind of capability with the available 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine that generates up to 400 horsepower and up to 415 lb-ft of torque.
With the standard 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine and when properly equipped, the Explorer can tow up to 5,300 pounds. It can tow up to 5,000 pounds with the hybrid powertrain when properly equipped.
Selectable Drive Modes help enhance your capability by allowing you to choose from up to seven different modes based on your driving conditions. This includes a Tow/Haul mode, which moves upshifts to higher engine speeds to reduce the transmission shift frequency when towing.
Ford Explorer Interior
As a 3-row SUV, the Ford Explorer offers an interior with all the space you need. If you need to move your oldest into the dorms at school or carry bikes out to the trail, you can fold down the rear seats to fit up to 87.8 cubic feet of cargo into the back of your SUV. The PowerFold® rear seats make it easy to create a flat loading surface with just the press of a button.
If it’s your turn to carpool, then leave the back seats up. You’ll have room for up to seven passengers. The interior has the following dimensions:
- Passenger volume: 152.7 cubic feet
- Legroom (front): 43 inches
- Legroom (middle): 39 inches
- Legroom (rear): 32.2 inches
Ford Explorer Trim Levels
The Ford Explorer makes it simple to choose your ideal SUV by letting you pick between five different trim levels:
- Explorer
- XLT
- Limited (hybrid option available)
- ST
- Platinum
The Explorer is the name of the base-level trim, which comes with all the standard features. That includes the standard 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine, as well as the SYNC® 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ connectivity.
As you move up in trim levels, you add on more features. For example, the Limited trim comes standard with the 2.3L engine, but it’s also the only trim to have a hybrid option. This includes the 3.3L V6 Hybrid engine.
The ST trim comes with race-ready features like the 400-horsepower enhanced 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine, as well as special ST badging. With the Platinum trim, you’ll get almost everything from the other four trims, plus features like heated sideview mirrors.
