Head-to-Head

The Ford F-150 base model XL just edges out the Silverado with a starting price of $28,940, one of the lowest F-150 starting prices in its class. The base model Chevy Silverado 1500 starts at $29,300. Prices go up depending on trim levels, available options and engine choices.

When considering powertrain, the F-150 is hard to beat with its diverse six-engine lineup and hybrid engine availability. The F-150 starts with a 3.3-liter V-6 offering 290 HP and 265 pound-feet of torque. Moving up in power, Ford offers a twin-turbo 2.7-liter Ecoboost with 325 HP as well as a twin-turbo 3.5 Ecoboost with 400 HP. A 5.0-liter V-8 and a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine are also available. For top power, the F-150 pairs its PowerBoost electric engine with its 3.5 twin-turbo V6 for a whopping 430 HP and 570 pound-feet of torque.

The Silverado offers five engine choices including a 4.3-liter V-6 with 285 HP, a 5.3-liter V-8 with 355 HP and a 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 HP. The Silverado also offers two inline engine options, the 2.7-liter I-4 with 310 HP and the 3.0-liter I-6 diesel with 277 HP. There is no hybrid engine option for the Silverado.

The F-150's interior is comfortable with heated and massaging front seats that fold flat for a quick nap. There are a number of storage cubbies as well as the ability for the center console to fold flat for a level laptop working space. It also comes with storage under the back seat that is lockable to protect valuables.

The Silverado interior can be configured in many ways and comes with available ventilated front seats and wireless smartphone charging. Like the F-150, it offers a good amount of storage cubbies but its cabin appears to be carried over from a previous model.

The F-150 features the Ford Pro Power Onboard system with the capability of adding a generator with an output of 2.0 kW to the vehicle. With the available PowerBoost option, you can pump up the power on the generator to 7.2 kW and plug power tools or appliances into one of its four 120-volt outlets. The Silverado offers no such option on its models.

The F-150's 12-inch center console touchscreen comes in larger than the Silverado's 8-inch touchscreen. Both vehicles offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality. Both trucks come with helpful safety features, including automated emergency braking with pedestrian present detection and available lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist.

The F-150's leaf spring suspension offers driver and passenger comfort. The F-150 also offers nimble steering for ride firmness and convenience when maneuvering in tighter spaces like parking lots. The Silverado utilizes independent suspension and while handling is responsive, the ride quality can be uneven.

The F-150 comes out on top in towing capacity. Its 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V-6 engine features 400 HP and 500 pound-feet of torque, capable of towing 14,000 pounds with the Max Trailer Tow Package. It has a payload capacity of 3,325 pounds with the 5.0 V-8. The Silverado can tow 13,300 pounds with its 6.2-liter V8 engine. It has a hauling capacity of 2,280 pounds.

The Decision

The Ford F-150 is the vehicle to buy with more engine choices, top-rated towing capacity, and smoother rideability. The F-150 was also named North American Truck of the year and is Edmonds' top-ranked full-sized truck.
